Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Radiofrequency (RF) Testing

Nearly all electronic devices generate some level of electromagnetic interference. To function reliably and gain market access, products must not only operate as intended in their environment but also comply with regulatory limits on unwanted emissions as well as demonstrate immunity to defined levels of electromagnetic disturbance (both radiated and conducted) in order to use the radio frequency spectrum efficiently and legally.

DEKRA’s Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Radio Frequency (RF) Testing services verify that electric and wireless products meet global safety, performance, and spectrum usage requirements. It includes evaluating emissions, immunity, radio performance, and electromagnetic exposure, supporting a wide range of industries and technologies.
DEKRA capabilities extend from traditional EMC and RF tests to advanced evaluations, such as:
  • Over-the-Air (OTA) Performance Testing: Measures wireless performance under realistic usage conditions.
  • Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Testing: Ensures compliance with RF exposure limits for devices used near the human body.
  • Automotive EMC Testing: Validates that vehicles’ electrical components (low voltage and high voltage components) meet regulatory requirements such as E-Mark and also specific requirements defined by main Automotive OEMs (e.g. GM, Stellantis, Daimler, BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai-KIA,…)

With our global network of accredited laboratories, DEKRA provides a comprehensive compliance pathway, from early-stage development and pre-compliance testing to full product certification. We serve a wide range of sectors, including consumer electronics, telecommunication, industrial machinery, medical devices, automotive, defence and aerospace.
As a Notified Body under the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU) and Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) and Certification Body for FCC (TCB for Unlicensed Radio Frequency Devices and Licensed Radio Service Equipment), ISED (FCB for Licence-exempt Radio Frequency Devices and Licensed Radio Service Equipment), Japan (CAB for Radio Law and Telecommunication Business Law) and Taiwan (RCB for NCC RF and Telecom regulations), DEKRA supports certification and regulatory approval in Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, and beyond to facilitate smooth and efficient market entry.

Automotive EMC: Supporting Safety and Compliance in Future Mobility

As vehicles become increasingly electric, and connected, the role of electromagnetic compatibility in ensuring road safety and functional reliability is more critical than ever. EMC testing helps safeguard key systems, from ADAS and infotainment to high-voltage drivetrains and V2X communications, against internal and external sources of interference.
DEKRA offers dedicated Automotive EMC testing services backed by extensive experience and Technical Service status under UN-ECE. Our laboratories are equipped to test Vehicle Components (low voltage and high voltage), radar sensors, wireless and connectivity systems, etc. Our capabilities adhere to detailed testing protocols defined by globally recognized automotive manufacturers, aligning with each OEM’s specific requirements, quality criteria, and performance expectations, helping suppliers meet both regulatory and industry-driven EMC requirements.
